Yo, that's the Kubrick gaze.

This 'gaze' tends to be a closeup shot of a subject, where it appears as though they are looking directly into the eyes of the viewer. The idea is that this device is used to draw in the audience, a trick that not only works, but further helps Kubrick's films stand out as unusually gripping.
